In order to solve the Brexit crisis regarding the Northern Ireland backstop,
Boris Johnson's team has come up with an ingenious plan: an agreement
between the DUP and Sinn Fein on the basis that both parties will vote for
Brexit in order to keep Northern Ireland in the EU after Brexit. This has the
support of the SNP and the Conservatives. In other words, these two parties
have essentially agreed not to support any Brexit policy that involves a hard
border with the Republic of Ireland. The main stumbling block has been that it
requires the agreement of the Northern Ireland Executive of a deal where
most of the power in the North lies with Westminster and the Republic of
Ireland will remain the only place where you can travel around without having
to worry about customs. Thus, this arrangement is designed to undermine the
Executive and the peace process.
