the latest samsung phone has a "bixby" button
when you press it, it immediately launches samsung's shitty version of alexa/siri/etc
you can't disable it
every time someone manages to release a way to disable it samsung patches the exploit

this is the most popular android manufacturer

what the FUCK.

@lynnesbian remembering when the virtual assistant was literally just called galaxy

@lynnesbian Wait really? That's terrifying. Especially given the fact that Samsung accounts for 20% of Korean GDP and makes military equipment.

@lynnesbian I'd still wanna tcpdump that traffic and find the cosine distance between network requests and my speech patterns as determined by a voice recorder.

I mean I'd be too lazy to do it, probably, but I'd think real hard about it. Or like not get the fishy phone. But I have an iPhone out of really dumb habit so I'm a hypocrite.

Do you know any good safe open source phones?

@sophia i'm incredibly hyped for when it's ready (april 2018)
there's also the neo900 which is in the works
and if you'd reeeaally like to, you can try porting ubuntu touch to your phone, although that can't be done with an iphone

@lynnesbian Well then...

@lynnesbian Clarification: There's more than one Bixby package on my device.

Also, I'm afraid to delete them because I know what happened the last time I tried to delete a built-in launcher. 😬

@lynnesbian It's weird how nowadays the more you spend on a phone, the worse it gets.

@lynnesbian You can disable it. However, you must activate it and register with Samsung before you can do so.

@lynnesbian i hate it so much! i have never, ever, purposely pressed that button its the most annoying thing cause it launches Bixby and you cant leave the launch screen and cancel it until its done launching

@lynnesbian The condition of Actually Existing Android on new phones is usually really bad, and Samsung is especially well known for that.

The first thing I did when I got a Samsung phone was install Cyanogen (now Lineage).

@lynnesbian I refuse to even set it up, I just have to live with the annoyance of hearing "Hi! I'm Bixby!" every time I accidentally push the stupid button

Now, if it were a "Busby Berkeley" button, that would be cool

Stop trying to make bixby happen.
It's not gonna happen

@lynnesbian They should have done like blackberry did with their extra button.
