welp. microsoft is gonna base edge on chromium

google now has near-complete control of the web, and they're already using it to push proprietary garbage. i'm sure nothing bad will come of this

@lynnesbian demolition man was right. Except it's Google, not taco bell

@lynnesbian i'm like at this point where i think we need to figure out a whole new thing to replace the web. at this point oligopolists have so much control over it that it almost seems like a lost cause at this point. literally google is in a stronger position re: browser marketshare than microsoft ever was bc the odds they will ever face antitrust actions over their practices is much lower.

@lynnesbian Microsoft was in control once and now they’ve given it to someone else. Not sure Microsoft knows how the web works 🤷🏻‍♀️.

@lynnesbian yeah but we have Firefox from the Mozilla corporation!

@lynnesbian What bugs me is that regardless of what rendering engine that Edge uses, their usage numbers won't increase. No ordinary windows user knows or cars that Edge uses Chromium or Chakra/EdgeHTML.

It won't help their browser marketshare at all but it will sure as hell fuck over the entire web.

@lynnesbian How does using a particular rendering engine give anyone control? If anything, this could make Edge a viable choice for people who would otherwise have chosen Chrome.

@mansr @lynnesbian i think that is the whole point. i feel that the reason they made the switch is not the full reality. Although it is still dirty that google pulls those tricks. I've just checked browser shares, worldwide chrome is comfy above 65% some say even approaching 75. and then the other browsers that use chromium. it sounds suspeciously like a conspiracy. Google is effectively taking over the web. Even the HTTP 2 came from google.

@mansr @lynnesbian mans R, using the same browsing engine effectively turns you into chrome. just the face differs. if you control the browsing engine, you control that browser's behaviour and the direction it involves in. people saying firefox will save us. nope, FF is on single digit market share!! everybody uses chrome. which is essentially spyware because it scans your harddrive and keeps all details about any activity you perform on the web.

@Steven_Vervaecke @lynnesbian Only the Chrome browser has the deep Google integration. I'm sure Edge will continue to favour Microsoft services like Bing.

@Steven_Vervaecke @lynnesbian Whatever reasons MS had for this move, helping Google certainly wasn't one of them.

@mansr @lynnesbian And all of this is essentially discounting the mobile web on android, which is close to 95% of all phones. And not forget all the car radios in your car. the majority are running Android too!

sorry for the long post :)

@lynnesbian just create a new protocol that is way cooler than http so that everyone moves away from them lol
